Benoît Jacquot (R) with Kent Jones in a Q&A at the opening of the “Benoît Jacquot: Leading Ladies” series at FIAF.

“Benoît Jacquot: Leading Ladies” series is an homage to Benoît Jacquot, presented by FIAF, in celebration of the 20th anniversary of “Rendez-Vous with French Cinema”, co-presented by the Film Society of Lincoln Center (FSLC) and Unifrance Films.

Series opened with “The Disenchanted /La Désenchantée”. After the film Benoît Jacquot and Kent Jones talked about the film and his other movies.

KENT JONES: You said something like this is your first film….

BENOÎT JACQUOT: This is my sixth film. Just to make sure I counted before I came here. I recall that two or three movies I did prior gave me the desire to stop making movies, althought my desire to make movies was with me since I was a teenager. So I made this movie to fallow the wish of a very young girl, you see in the film. (…) At the time it really ecoed something I was really searching for. And this film became my second first film.

Since this film I made movies as I wanted to make them. Of course these movies are unequel in qualities, some are good, some are less. And anycase they were obviously the end product of process of constant trust. A constant trust in process.

K.J.: And constant response to different actors and actresses.

B.J.: That’s the theme of this series. Right!

K.J.: Yes. That’s right!

B.J.: Because, the fack that you are following the actress, kind of you are answering the wish –if she is a new comer or a famous star. Ever since this film, this process of way of making films, really suits me much more than the other way. So, it is kind of fantasy. That is my own. It is very French!

K.J. That’s American, too. At least New York!

They talked more about the film.

And K.J. asked: Digital or film?

B.J.: I really resisted going digital up until certain point. After watching the films by Lars Van Trier, I realised that aesthetically you could reach something that chemical film can create. So, afterwards I have no desire to go back to chemical film stock. But I don’t shoot digitally in a different manner than on a film stock. It is cheaper for the producer, which is never a bad news.
